A raging sea. A drama based on true events. A premium production.
January 1993. In the midst of a storm, the Polish ferry Jan Heweliusz sinks on the Sweden-Poland route. 55 victims—a tragedy that has left a deep mark on the Polish collective memory.
Directed by Jan Holoubek, this mini-series (5 × 45’) recounts the sinking of the MS Jan Heweliusz ferry . A Netflix original supported by Belgium’s facilities, technical talent, and funding. Produced by Telemark (Poland) with Beside Productions (Belgium) and the support of Beside Tax Shelter, Heweliusz perfectly illustrates the place Belgium – and Beside - can occupy today in major international productions.
The aquatic scenes, among the most spectacular in the series, were shot at Lites Studios in Vilvoorde, the world's most sophisticated aquatic studio, under the supervision of Beside Productions. A 1,450 SQM pool, up to 10 m deep, with waves controlled up to 1 meter, water cannons, rain, wind, and floating platforms: a fully controlled environment to recreate the shipwreck in strikingly realistic conditions.
It is also the longest ever shoot at the Lites Studios waterstage. For Beside Productions, this is yet another high-profile project under its belt (and its 6th at Lites Studios!).
On Netflix worldwide.
